As we gather on this Seventh Sunday of Easter, also celebrating the Ascension of the Lord, we find ourselves at a unique intersection of reflection and anticipation. The readings today invite us to consider not only the triumphant departure of Jesus into heaven but also the implications of His absence for our daily lives. How do we live in the "in-between" – the time after the Ascension and before His promised return? How do we maintain unity and order, and live out our faith with conviction?

The Assurance of His Presence

The Ascension can feel like a farewell, a separation. Yet, the scriptures assure us that it is, in fact, a transition to a different kind of presence. Jesus says, "I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). This promise isn't just a comforting thought; it's a call to recognize Christ's presence in our lives, in the sacraments, and in one another. It reminds us that even when we feel alone or lost, we are part of something bigger, a community of believers connected by the Holy Spirit.

Living in the "In-Between"

The time between the Ascension and the Second Coming is a period of active waiting. It's not a passive lull but a time for us to embody the teachings of Christ in our daily lives. This requires a deep understanding of Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts, actions, and interactions. It means striving for justice, showing compassion, and living with integrity, even when it's difficult.

We are called to maintain unity and order within the Church, just as the early Church leaders emphasized. This unity isn't about uniformity of thought or action but about a shared commitment to the Gospel and a willingness to work together for the common good. It requires humility, repentance, and a willingness to forgive one another, recognizing that we are all imperfect and in need of grace.

The Authority of Love and Service

The Ascension also highlights the authority of Christ, an authority rooted in love and service. As followers of Christ, we are called to exercise authority in the same way – not through domination or coercion but through selfless service and a commitment to the well-being of others. This means standing up for the marginalized, advocating for justice, and using our gifts and talents to build up the Kingdom of God.

A Call to Asceticism and Spiritual Growth

The readings also invite us to consider the importance of asceticism and spiritual growth. This doesn't necessarily mean withdrawing from the world but rather cultivating a discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that allows us to detach from worldly distractions and focus on our relationship with God. By embracing these practices, we can deepen our understanding of Scripture, strengthen our faith, and become more effective witnesses to the Gospel.

Embracing the Tension

Living in the "in-between" can be challenging. We may struggle with doubt, uncertainty, and the tension between our earthly desires and our spiritual aspirations. However, it is in this tension that we grow. By embracing the challenges and seeking God's guidance, we can become more resilient, compassionate, and Christ-like.

As we celebrate the Ascension, let us not only remember the triumphant departure of Jesus but also embrace the call to live out our faith with sincerity and conviction. Let us strive for unity, serve others with love, and cultivate a deep understanding of Scripture. And let us always remember that even in the "in-between," we are not alone. Christ is with us always, to the end of the age.
